U.S. Land Office - plat books, ca.1807-1949.

These plat books contain original maps that depict land surveyed by the United States government in Ala. Before public lands could be offered for sale, deputy surveyors made a study of the land and prepared field notes which were sent to the U.S. Land Office. Clerks and draftsmen in the U.S. Land Office transformed the field notes into plats. Plats are diagrams drawn to scale showing boundaries and subdivisions of a tract of land, as well as rivers, streams and other features of terrain. Some plats also show settlements and private land claims. Sometimes letters and notes are attached which relate to the survey. Each plat map is signed by the deputy surveyors and surveyor-general. The bulk of the records cover the years 1811-1860. The St. Stephen's Land District books contain many notes of private land claims in the Mobile area and also include plats of the land granted to the "Vine and Olive Colony" in Marengo Co. One of the Huntsville Land District volumes contains a plan of the town of Coldsprings.
